Welcome to Nicholas Hodder's web site and thank you for visiting.
I use my web site to publish photos and also to write about anything that I wish to put into the public domain. I wrote some pages as a reference on subjects that people often ask me about.
I host the web site at home on an old Pentium 2 laptop via my ADSL2+ internet connection. Old laptops are ideal as web servers in a domestic environment, as they are quieter and more power-efficient than desktop PCs and the battery serves as a built-in UPS. The main reason for hosting the site at home is to avoid the disk space limitations of an external web server. The downside is that the speed that visitors can download from the site is restricted to the 1.4Mbps upload speed of my internet connection, so the photos can be slow to open compared to a professionally hosted web server.
The thumbnails for the photo pages are created using an excellent freeware application, JAlbum.
